In the late 1800’s, Fall River Massachusetts was the busiest textile-manufacturing city in the United States. The high demand for skilled mill workers brought many immigrants from Ireland and England to Fall River, the “we’ll try” city (yes, that’s actually their motto). They brought with them their love of meat pies, which were cheap, filling, and most importantly, portable.
Hartley’s Original Pork Pies on 1729 South Main St., Fall River (not to be confused with Hartley’s Pork Pies in Lincoln, R.I., or Hartley’s in Somerset, MA) has been baking and serving English style meat pies since 1900.
Their pork pies boast a generous portion of well-seasoned lean ground pork enhanced by a meaty broth, all encased in a buttery, flakey golden brown crust. Made fresh daily with pure ingredients, Hartley’s pork pies have an incredibly clean and fresh taste.
Sam’s Bakery is located at 256 Flint St. and serves fresh Lebanese and Syrian baked goods. The first thing you notice at Sam’s is the crowd, the place is literally packed with people, fresh baked flat breads and meat pies.
The second thing you notice is the rich smell of middle-eastern spices that permeates the shop. If you order a “Meat Pie” at Sam’s, you get a fresh-baked triangle shaped pocket bread which is slightly chewy, like good pizza dough.
This pocket is filled with finely ground beef that is seasoned with sweet spices (perhaps cinnamon, clove, allspice, nutmeg, etc), and small chunks of onion.
Like Hartley’s, Sam’s pies are made using traditional recipes and fresh ingredients. Both of these establishments have many loyal fans, and deserve their status as cult favorites in Southeastern Massachusetts.
