This Saturday, January 26th, WMVY is hosting their annual Big Chili Contest, held at the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs.

The contest was first held 27 years ago, as way to break up the deep-winter doldrums, and has grown into one of the Vineyard’s most popular events.

Over thirty contestants are expected, bringing their best recipes in a variety of categories including professional, amateur, hottest chili, veggie chili, furthest traveled and, “Is it really chili?”

More than just an Island event, the contest draws crowds from all over New England, and contestants from as far away as Texas.

This year, a crowd of nearly 3,000 is expected to descend on the P-A Club to dance, drink, and sample the various chilis.

Some attendees like to dress the part, wearing crazy hats, fake mustaches and the like.

The party starts at 11 AM, with music being provided by Johnny Hoy & the Bluefish, Entrain, and Mariachi band Mexico Lindo.

Tickets are $30 per person and benefit The Red Stocking Fund.
